I heard Dreamweaver was good, but the price is crazy. Anyone know of anyother programs out there?

Are you looking for a program to make html pages and desveloping css?

What do you mean with web deisgn?

for example, if you are looking for a program for developing php (as you know, Dreamweaver can be used for developing php as a php development ide), Dreamweaverwill not be a good option.

Have you heard of Notepad? 100% free and straightforward.

I've tried Dreamweaver before, but I never felt comfortable enough to keep using it. If you're just looking for a tool with syntax highlighting, then I recommend Notepad++. An excellent tool imo.

Dreamweaver has got all the features of notepad++ plus more! I recommend dreamweaver, both for beginners and experts. However its up to you, like chris said, some users feel comfortable with a Notepad!

One more thing: Notepad++ is free of charge, and afaik Dreamweaver is not.

If you want to use free editor for PHP, Then Editorplus is the best one.

Well Dreamweaver has a lot of option. You can play with them :P

The best at the moment is Microsoft Expression Web. I find that Dream weaver is rather more difficult to master and it has become a teeny bit bloated, I believe it is more expensive than Expression Web.

I teach web design, my students use a free package call First Page 2006. It is so easy to use and allows you to tinker with the HTML code. It copes with modern techniques very well such as XHTM and CSS style sheets. I do not recommend any program that does not allow you tweak the HTML code such as Serif, you are trapped for ever if you use such mouse programs.
